Serial was a vision Kalen Bruce had had for over 10 years. The concept was to take clips from interviews with serial killers and infuse it into electronic/rock music, taking the places of vocals. The idea was not to glorify the killers; it was actually quite the opposite. The intent was to artistically display God’s grace in a way few people think about it. God forgives and Jesus died for all of us. He can forgive even the most heinous sins. When people think about the worst sins they can imagine, serial killers come into the mix. Throughout the album, you’ll get inside the minds of these killers. Some are remorseful; some are far from it. The album concludes with a clip from a court hearing where a father addresses the man who killed his daughter and forgives the man. It’s an emotional rollercoaster and it was written in the same fashion. The goal is to make people think and to actually relate to the killers. We all fall short. We’re no better than they are. God can forgive all of us in the same way. We aren’t called to hold ourselves on a pedestal. We’re not called to judge. If nothing else, just listen to the interview slips through the music, think, and pray.
